Hiking

Kaapsche Hoop is situated right next to the Berlin forest which is owned by the Komatiland Forestry Company, on whose land the Kaapsche Hoop hiking trail meanders through breathtaking scenery, plantations and historical sites.

The trail is split into various options ranging from two to five nights. The trail can be started from Barretts (train) Coaches provide the accommodation) or the Kaapsche Hoop hut in the town. The shortest route is a mere 19 km, while the longest is almost 55 km.

Several buildings that were built in die gold rush in the early 1880's are visible along the trail, as well as the blue swallow plain were these rare and endangered birds breed in old mine shafts. This grassland has been set aside specifically for the protection of the blue swallows habitat.

Hikers will also meet some of the wild horses for which Kaapsche Hoop is famous, along the route. And then there is the Kaapsche Hoop village with its arts and crafts shops and pub or two.

The Kaapsche Hoop hiking trail offers four overnight huts. Besides the Barretts Coaches, some 500 metres from the Berlin plantation offices, the trail also offer a overnight hut in the village itself. Along the route one will find the Cotzeestroom Hut near beautiful streams and the Wattles Hut which is situated in a patch of pine trees.

Horseback Riding

With all the talk of wild horses, it is inevitable that horse riding will be one of the many activities on offer at Kaapsche Hoop. The mounts are not, however, the wild horses but a stable of well mannered and well maintained horses.

Christo is you host at Kaapschehoop Horseback trails, which also offer accommodation.
